Hardwood Flooring Installation
Hardwood flooring varies by species, board width, colour and grade. Your selection process begins usually with colour, a highly personal matter.
Where it will be installed influences your species selection: hickory has a very high hardness rating and is excellent for heavy-traffic areas. White Oak, Red Oak, Hard Maple, Red Maple, Beech, White Ash are popular choices; for something more extraordinary, your selection might be Walnut, Cherry or Red Elm. For rustic locations cedar and pine planks are often chosen.
Board width of 2 1/4, 3 1/4, 4 1/4 or 5 1/4 inches may suit your home, or you may prefer the look of plank flooring 4 1/4 to 6 1/4 inches wide. A mix of widths adds a unique character. Rob Waldroff`s Ryerson Architectural Technologist training provides the knowledge required to create a balanced mixed-width effect you will enjoy for life.
Stairs' treads (and risers, if you want an all-wood effect) can be overlaid with your hardwood flooring selection. Alternatively, you may choose to overlay only the treads, painting the risers to create an effect that blends well with painted baseboard and window trim in older homes.
